Perhaps he accumulates some sort of time particleso during the day they build up, and then when he sleeps they reach some critical mass and blink him forward 14 days. He wakes up and has low levels again.
Just an idea for a mechanism. You could do some stuff with him trying to stay awake for ages and when he eventually sleeps he zips ahead a year or something. So he really hates night time.
Edit: You could call it "Fought Night" :)
