There are Coke and Pepsi
But they're the names of the drinks themselves as much as the name of the company. Besides, how many times have you had this conversation in a pub:
"...pint of best, small white wine and a coke please."
"Er, we've got Pepsi, is that alright?"
"Meh."

Many times, but if they only have Pepsi, I order lemonade, can't stand the stuff.

Are you making a serious claim that you can tell the difference?

Yes
I am confident I could pass blind taste tests.

Fair enough. I can see a distinction between their 'diet' and 'regular' varieties
But between the two brands, I really fail to see how they differ.

My sister didn't believe me either when I said I could taste the difference, so we did actually do a taste test and I can. Pepsi can only be drunk on sufferance and in the absence of anything else more palatable.

on the subject of taste tests my parents did one on goats milk versus cow's milk when I was little in the hopes of fooling me

Pepsi's a bit sweeter.
Although I prefer Coke. Paradoxically, I can tolerate Diet Pepsi, but Diet Coke is rank unless it's the one with lime in it.

I like how it's always said in a semi-apologetic way
Pepsi is inferior to Coca Cola.

And Coca Cola is inferior to Diet Coke from anything but draught.

No
I don't like Diet Coke, apart from that stuff with lemon in, that was alright.

Diet coke tastes like bicarb
My fat relatives drink it so they can excuse their obesity.
"I'm trying, look!"

I love it when fatties do that
I mock them wholeheartedly for it, though usually just in my head.
