Even if they don't need it, as guarantor he's still responsible for the rent. I'm not sure there's such a thing as a "half-guarantor" I'm sure he can trust you, but it's a major responsibility. If you got hit by a car tomorrow he's still probably got to cough up 12 months rent, for instance. He'd be a bit of a arse if he didn't at least discuss it with his wife, and maybe she's not keen?
