If the company you work for at the moment 'need' you then maybe you can negotiate a raise
to reflect this?

I can afford double my rent but I really don't want to because then I'd be broke as a joke

I'm guessing social housing is different in the States?
You can't apply for a subsidised appartment from welfare?
