Agree with all the abovebar Ronald Welch who I don't think I read. The Grey King by Susan Cooper was fantastic.

Ronald Welch was fucking brilliant.His books all featured the same family but in different periods in history. Wonderful stuff*
*quite possibly bilge but they were much loved in our house
