This is a question Political Correctness Gone Mad

Freddy Woo writes: "I once worked on an animation to help highlight the issues homeless people face in winter. The client was happy with the work, then a note came back that the ethnic mix of the characters were wrong. These were cartoon characters. They weren't meant to be ethnically anything, but we were forced to make one of them brown, at the cost of about 10k to the charity. This is how your donations are spent. Wisely as you can see."

How has PC affected you? (Please add your own tales - not five-year-old news stories cut-and-pasted from other websites)

The Dambusters
ITV dub "Nigger" into "Boy" when they show it. Apparently fewer people now complain about the dubbing than used to complain about the dog's name.

Guy Gibson must be spinning in his grave.

saying that though,
they haven't dubbed over any of the dialogue in Blazing Saddles.

the dialogue in blazing saddles is sending up racism
naming a dog 'nigger' is racist, albeit from a time when attitudes were less enlightened

hardly the same thing

It's quite an interesting question though:
given that the dog was actually called Nigger, is it racist to call it Nigger in the film? I'd say no, but be interested to know what other people think

"The Rats in the Walls" by H.P. Lovecraft...
...features a cat called "Nigger-Man".

Of course, Lovecraft was incredibly, virulently racist, and even wrote a poem called "On the Creation of Niggers". His horror stories are excellent, though.

Shirley...
it's "more" people complain about the dubbing?

Since this is historical fact, no matter how unseemly it may seem now, it's ridiculous to change it.

Ansd they don't seem to have a problem with there 'rap' videos do they?

Outrage I say

that's what I'm talkin' 'bout
must agree with the comment that it is a fact that this was the dogs name. You can't change history just because you feel uncomfortable with it now. The word Nigger simply means black, the dog was black, would it be unacceptable to call a white dog Snowy?? Or a red haired cat ginger?? Plus if it's ok for one black person to call another (or indeed a white person) "my nigger" why is it offensive if I say it? That my dear sir (or indeed madam)is racist!!

I don't get it.
Why is it racist to call the dog Nigger?
Yes, the original dog was certainly named so due to the less-enlightened times in which it lived but, as has been pointed out, it's a historical fact that that's what the dog was called.

Also, for it to be racist to call the dog Nigger, that surely implies that it's the dog that would be offended, does it not?
I mean, I realise the word itself has offensive connotations but that's when it's directed towards black/coloured (delete as is appropriately PC) people, isn't it?
