Ummmm...
I'm not knocking the effort involved in knitting a scarf, but probably wasn't seen as an outstanding gift by your boyfriend either. He'd probably rather of got a DVD or maybe even a new videogame.
Just as an addendum to your 'handy guide'.

The point is
I put in 10000 times more effort than he did.
Besides, he loved the scarf, and I asked him what he wanted for christmas he didn't say a new videogame or a dvd, he said 'a doctor who scarf'.
