This is a question Professions I Hate

Broken Arrow says: Bankers, recruitment consultants, politicians. What professions do you hate and why?

Solicitors who can't spell or proofread
By and large, I've not had many problems with solictors. True, the conveyancing solictors who helped with my house purchase were a bit slow yet expected me to move at the speed of light, but mostly they've done what they said.

However, for a profession that's supposedly based on fine detail and careful consideration of the facts, there really is no excuse for particularly obvious spelling mistakes and forgetting that the VAT rate went back up in January. If I'm spending hundreds of pounds on someone that's basically doing sophisticated form filling, I do expect my letters to be spelt correctly.

You're not kidding.
I'm doing law through the OU, and as part of our course they sent us a free copy of Student Law Review.
"Sign up for our Special Student Rate, only £00s per year!"

Like I'm going to give you money, when you put the word "OMMISION" on the front page.

The Love Song of J Alfred Prufreader
LET us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherised upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-desserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question …
Oh, do not ask, “What is it?”
Let us go and make our visit.

I agree
but I wouldn't pull them up on the VAT thing if they have undercharged you!

if the work was done before january
it has to be charged at the old vat rate, at least according to my firm's accounts department!

In this case that wasn't true
It was simply a mistake on their part. I can believe that for pre-January business it applies, though.

this
"the seller has agreed to except your offer" was a little gem I got in a letter from a solicitor once

The least of their inadequacies.
I spend way too much time in the company of lawyers and I have observed the following traits of failure: spelling; punctuation (I am assured that "the law requires a different interpretation of the rules of grammar and punctuation" i.e gobbledegook); typing; time recording; an inability to use effing MS Word or an email application and for pity's sake if your spelling and, or, proofreading is crap at the very least turn to the beast that is spellchecker (preferably configured to English (British).

Some of them are perfectly nice people but aren't 'the professions' supposed to occupy the upper echelons of learning.

P.s If I have failed to proofread this properly please feel free to abuse me.

Or, indeed, spelled correctly
"Spelt" is a type of edible grain closely related to wheat, often used to make flour.

Sauce for the goose...
