The only protest story I haveMy paternal great grandfather(hyphen?) left his home country when he thought they were going "a bit too far." His act of protest was leaving Germany in 1936-37. His sister stayed though, and she married Hitler*.
*Not entirely sure, different sources say different relations. Sister, aunt, cousin, even niece have been suggested.
