At the risk of being flamed...owch, ooh! I think you can have relationship overlap in a non-violent, non-lying scumdog way if it's pretty clear in the first place you're just dating. It's the norm where I'm from. You can't date in an established mongamous relationship, though. Once the rules have been agreed on, there's no breaking them without dishonor.
In fact, as long as you're up front, you can sleep with more than one person at a time without cheating. I've done that, but as soon as anything became in the least bit serious with one, I quit seeing the other guys.

^-- thisAs long as you're being honest about seeing other people, it's not cheating. Q.v. polyamory. However, honesty is an absolute, total, non-negotiable requirement if you want your relationship's lifetime to be measured in units larger than hours.
