At the newsagents
I asked the young girl behind the counter for "Half a dozen first class stamps please". She gave me a rather puzzled look then turned to her boss and asked "Er, Mary.... wots arf a dozen? "

I bought 10 fags for £2.99 the other week.
The chap behind the counter used a calculator to work out the change from £5.

He was about 50. Not sure he was a product of the British education system, but he did run a fucking shop so you'd think he'd have half a clue.

Perhaps, you should have asked for

Half a dozen
is not really out of usage though is it. Still fairly common to hear it. I think more of these show how kids today really just don't listen to what goes on around them. If it doesn't directly effect them then they have absolutely no interest.

29 you say...
Surely a baker's dozen plus the number of pennyweights in an ounce less the quantity of pecks in one whole bushel, would be the better way of and should be how all British children are taught to count.
