As an explanation, my reply would be: A less well developed brain and/or an upbringing which didn't allow her to learn as much as she ought.
Or, to put it another way: did that belief really decrease her IQ, ability to think, or knowledge?

Pedantic as it may beI do this all the time. I often find myself telling people they should be asking 'how' rather than 'why' (although this doesn't actually apply to this example).
