DIY Techno-hacks
Old hard drive platters make wonderfully good drinks coasters - they look dead smart and expensive and you've stopped people reading your old data into the bargain.
Have you taped all your remotes together, peep-show-style? Have you wired your doorbell to the toilet? What enterprising DIY have you done with technology?
Extra points for using sellotape rather than solder.

I reckon it is a hack
I'm not using the headphones to listen to the start up noise - it's so that that speaker cuts out, as you can't control the volume until the computer has actually booted up.
the important bit is the jack, not the headphones at the other end of it.
yes I know I could just turn the system sounds off for boot up.

that would require thinking about it another time though
it's one of those things where as soon as it has happened it is forgotten.

I hate the Windows noises
The first thing I do on a new XP installation is set sounds to 'none'
The interminable click whenever you do something in Explorer drives me up the wall.

I'm the same
not just computers either. anything that makes a noise gets turned off. mobile phones in particular. Even to the point where my phone is never off silent.
