Actuallyyou can't quit being an MP. You have to wait for the next election or by-election and just not stand for re-election.
The most powerful men in Britain are the Permanent Secretaries of the civil service, who have never ever been elected in all our long history - and everything was going fine until democracy started getting in the way and mucking things up; we had an Empire and everything.

Wikipedia got it wrong on one point;the two offices mentioned are not the only two still used; Chancellor to the Duchy of Lancaster is also still used on occasion.
