Reassure friends and acquaintances who are going in for minor surgeryby recalling someone who went in for exactly the same thing only to die unexpectedly on the operating table.
(If you are a pensioner then you don't need this top tip, it's somehow built into your psyche and will manifest itself, unbidden, when you pick up your free buss pass. For these purposes extend 'friends and acquaintances' to include check-out girls, post office clerks and people you stand next to in a queue to get the bus.)

Similar thingMy mum had a replacement hip operation yesterday.
Spoke to dad in the evening and he said
"yes, she's quite sore, understandably,
but at least she's not dead".
