You need gaffer tape, especially if it is on a porous surface where solvents make goo.
Take the gaffer tape and repeatedly rub it down and pull it back off. in bits the label and its sticky will go onto the tape.
Also works for hair removal as well as any other method.
(Not recommended for testicular hair though)

Rub some white spirit on the label and leave it for about 10 minutes (or before it dries out).
The spirit gets absorbed into the paper and dissolves the glue.
The label usually comes off in one go then.

Once you use a solvent and it is the wrong one you are screwed and goo`ed. Try either of those on gaffer tape or camera tape residues, then you have to use swarfega to remove the mush created.
The only safe ones to try are Meths, or isopropyl alcohol as if it doesn`t work it just evaporates leaving you back where you were. NOT leaving oily goo slime like the two suggested by the sublimely impractical above.
Have you ever had to remove that stuff off a £15K camera lens after experts like you?
I have.
