I did it myself years ago before I forked out for a proper 5.1.
It's like Tesco Value 5.1.

How on earth does it decode surround channels from a dvd? Magic?
Also are you cramming two pairs of speakers in to the same positive input? I did this as a child and it halfed the volume.

because you can then decide if you want them on or not. If you are afflicted with just one set, then that's fine, just jam them in. i don't really know the science behind it all, but it works brilliantly. I just rigged it up to a surround receiver i have because it sounds much better than the in built surround that the amp has, much crisper and less processed.
