make sure it's ever so slightly over-ripe and quite soft. Also, skin it for about a quarter inch AROUND the hole.

put a watermelon in a bucket of hot water for five minutes or so and bore a hole in that.
Someone once told me that a jam jar of warmed up liver is a pretty realistic substitution. I've never tried it myself as I quite like liver and I wouldn't want to waste it.
