This is a question My most treasured possession

What's your most treasured possession? What would you rescue from a fire (be it for sentimental or purely financial reasons)?

My Great-Uncle left me his visitors book which along with boring people like the Queen and Harold Wilson has Spike Milligan's signature in it. It's all loopy.

Either that or my Grandfather's swords.

seeing as we're now blatantly lying
I'd save the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, which were given to my grandfather Tripitaka by the Magic Monkey King one day when he was bringing some Buddhist scriptures from India to China.

I believe they're quite rare.

I thought Tripitaka was a girl.
I know s/he was supposed to be a monk....but there was a certain delicacy to the features...

troubled me enormously as a boy
In the Japanese series the boy-monk Tripitaka was played by a woman, but I had the book on which the series was based (by Cheng'en Wu I believe - one of my favourite childhood tomes) so I knew the character was a lad.

But I fancied her/him, in my 8-year old way.

Thought I was 'on the turn' for a while there. Most perturbing...

*EDIT* now THERE'S some specialist erotic fiction for ya, Madame Poulet. Chinese medieval transgender monk porn.

If it meant I could go and watch
every episode of Monkey all over again then I'd consider it.

That was a fantastic programme. I remember running into primary school and discussing the previous night's episode with the only other child who watched it (as it was tucked away on BBC2)...a boy! I actually broke the unspoken rule of primary school - boys and girls shall not talk to each other because girls are wet and boys smell*.

*may not be true

I have all 39 episodes
I won the first four in an online competition a few months before they released the videos. I forgot I'd entered- and I never win anything (apart from a book on cheese in another online thingy) - imagine my joy when three tapes and a Monkey t-shirt turned up at work one day.

I've recently bought the soundtrack LP from Japan via EBay.

Bit of a Monkey nut you might say ha-ha

Fantastic!
For many years I wished I could just pull a few hairs out of my head, blow on them, wave them about and do magical things.

Monkey was ace.

And I always thought that Sandy looked like Neil from the Young Ones.

*probably not that

after about a dozen episodes
the actor playing Pigsy changed to some rubbish dude who was also in Shogun with Richard Chamberlain (another brilliant show in my humble opinion). I didn't remember this from my youth and was sorely disappointed.

Wow! more monkey fans.
I also fancied the monk girl but I knew she was a girl. I think I fancied monkey a little also.

Monkey was hot!

He flew and fought and was incredibly cool, while being simultaneously hot...erm...

I liked him too.

Monkey goes on...
You know, they're still showing Monkey in China, except it's not the monkey we all know from long ago...no, they made a newer version of it, with better make up and newer-yet-crapper special effects. Thanks to those marathons shown last Chinese New Year I now know what the hell was going on, all that for a lecture...

......and
Jamie Hewlett and that oaf from Blur did a Monkey opera last year, didn't they?

But no one will ever touch the original. Right, fans?

Despite being 34 and 6'2" I still quietly dream of making a fancy-dress party entrance in full Monkey regalia. This, I am aware, makes me more than a little sad. But, hey ho! Such is (my) life!
