About the best I can muster.
Was calling 100 and asking to speak to Busby. Repeatedly.

Never did get to speak to him:-(

hmmm, yes...we rang the operator when about 10
to ask 'are you on the line?' and when the operator replied 'Yes' we'd blurt 'well you better get off it then, there's a train coming!'

Is Mr Wall at home?
NB: Doesn't work when you ring Max Wall*

*almost certainly dead, actually, so it would not only not work, but would also be insensitive.

I hardly
need say anything about ringing the Samaritans then.

You insensitive bastard.
I just dropped my Wall's ice crea... Wait, we did that one already didn't we?

Haha!
This was before I was ten. After that it escalated into full blown pranks with 'phones. I'd call a public 'phone from another with a view of the first, and when people actually picked up I'd pretend to be an engineer and tell them to shout down it, wave it around as far outside the box as possible "to check the functional robustness of the handset"!
I even got one as far as nearly putting the handset in water to check how waterproof it was!
THEN I grew up. A bit. Sort of.

'Is your refrigerator running?'

No, it's switched off for its annual defrosting.
