I'm 18, In sixthform and have never been employed
Probably a mistake to have pinned hopes on a summer job and some sort of income. It seems there are no jobs.

There are jobs, they just won't hire *you*.

Usually either because you don't have experience, because you're literate or because they know you'll bugger off once you realise it's shit.

Although I have been offered 4 weeks full time temp work in August (aptly in a job centre plus, a mere 10 minutes stroll from my house) covering for people on holiday. Unfortunately I have booked a little jaunt to the Edinburgh festival in the middle of it and paid a bit towards it all ready.

I will not take the job if it means fucking my holiday off. I'm off to Edinburgh (from Liverpool) for a 5 year degree course. I need a party summer with my mates before I leave.

Although if it's silly money it would be hard to turn down; having a fair chunk of savings while being a student would be a godsend.

My advice
Is use what you have to hand that costs you no initial start up cost.

I always used to go and mow old biddies grass, rake up leaves and prune the odd tree in the summer. I had all the gear at home anyway and there were always plenty of takers, just flyer all the wealthier areas in town.

I used to earn cash in hand and I was out in the sun all summer. There was also usually lots of cups of tea and cakes.

get yourself to all the local employment agencies
depending where you are, they might have some interesting ongoing contracts (bar/wait staff at racecourses, stadiums etc), they might have some really tedious manual labour. you never know though.
