I have conky running on one of my monitors.
It shows me:
The size of my entropy pool.
The uptime of my PC.
The temperature of my graphics card.
The current CPU speed.
The top 5 processes and their CPU and memory usage.
The percentage usage of each core of my CPU.
My RAM usage.
My swap usage (almost always zero).
Disk cache and buffers.
Used and free space on my drives.
Temperatures of my hard drives.
Network speed up and down and data transferred.
So I think I have you beaten there.

Slightly different layout, obviously.
But that is exactly what I mean, yes.

my .conkyrc goes everywhere with me.
Taken me a while to get it right. But no matter which machine, give or take a few #'s in gedit or nano and I'm off like a prawn in the sun.

Problem with that
is the uncertainty principle.
You are using memory to monitor your memory useage.
Just imagine how much memory you'd have if you weren't doing that? You'll never know.
