They're not failuresthey've chosen what makes them happy. Why is their happiness any less valid than yours, or the chap who swam the channel? It might not be what makes you or me happy, but the life you've described sounds like what most people want- good friends, neighbours, a family around them when they grow old, a partner they can trust.

I think what he's trying to say is that in a number of cases, the people concerned didn't so much "choose" the course of their lives as drift into it without thinking.(
