Some of his stuff before Lady in Red was goodThe album The Getaway, and in particular the track don't Pay the Ferryman are reasonable eighties pop.
Later stuff is pap, I agree.

Up to Lady In Redpleasant but sappy. The odd good song but with wimpy production values and sung by a man with a reedy voice. Mm, no.
