Middle-of-the-road-average-pop-mediocrity-valium-for-the-soul
This is getting quite difficult to narrow it down to a Singular Band. I've already seen entries for Lighthouse Family, Hothouse Flowers, James, Crowded House. I'd also like to add Spiritualised, Divine Comedy, Dodgy, eurrghh. Pop based around the idea that it is engineered to sound best played softly in the background at dinner parties...

I liked approx 50% of the early output of French band Air
until I started hearing it at every fucking civilised get together ever round about the start of this century. And their successive albums which got increasingly more tedious. Fuck off, Air.

I'd like to nominate Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle and Sebastian for this dubious honour as well.
Partly because they're every bit as one-dimensional and unspeakably tedious as the foregoing, but also because they have hipster appeal and are therefore immune to criticism.
