hey does anyone know
how to get rid of these fucking windows messanging service popups? I suspect there's some sort of security hole in XP that they're taking advantage of. (if you don't know what the hell I'm on about, don't bother replying).

Edit: oooh that's right... has anyone seen google ads lately. They've gone mad with the amount of o's in google. Or maybe it's just me going mad.

you should disable windows messenger
easiest way is to rename the windows messenger folder to "bill gates has a small penis"

edit: if you want to use MSN messenger, download it separately.

edit edit: or do what it says below, (run services.msc and then find the service, change its properties to disabled)

I'm not actually talking about MSN messenger
- I mean the pop-up alert-style windows that come up with the OK button on the bottom.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:29, archived)
yes, they
result from windows messenger, MSN messenger is slightly different renaming the folder will stop the pop-ups (100% guarantee)
(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:31, archived)
no they're not,
you have to go to the services thing somewhere and disable Messenger
(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:49, archived)
nope
renaming works, well at least it worked for me because it stops the service starting when the computer boots.
(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:53, archived)
but they are completely different things
it doesn't have a folder

hmm,
1 First, right click the Messenger icon in the system tray and click Exit.
2 Right click the Start button and click the Explore command to open the Windows Explorer.
3 In the Windows Explorer, expand the Program Files folder on the partition where your operating system is installed (the partition that holds the WINDOWS directory) and right click the Messenger folder and select Rename.
4 Rename the folder to MessengerDISABLED and press ENTER to commit the name change.
5 Restart the Computer. No more WINDOWS MESSENGER! Cool.

^^^^explanation from some how-to-do-stuff-with-XP-for-dumbasses, hence the really over-detailed wording^^^^

Xp Anti-Spy
Is very useful - you can turn off/uninstall a lot of the crap that you get with XP, I think you can get it here: www.xp-antispy.org

(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:43, archived)
Yeah
go into Services and turn off the Messanger service. I'm on a crappy NT machine so can't talk you through it but should be pretty straight forward.

(, Thu 2 Sep 2004, 12:27, archived)
