I used to be able to use one...
You need to make sure your tension is set properly. It sounds as though you have your wool far too tight or far too loose, which is why it is catching when you push the shuttle. Is it easy to draw it across or are you having to force it?

Some wool isn't brilliant for knitting machines either.
