I've just been reading Dixie Dean's wikipedia page and it says he hated the nickname "Dixie," preferring to be called Bill or Billy.
Pele has a similar complaint about his nickname, because it's essentially the Brazilian equivalent of 'gaga.'
It must be a horrible thing to be in the public eye and be known by a name you hate, but it makes me wonder why they let their clubs and countries call them by such names.
