My favourite books
are by Terry Goodkind, the Sword of Truth. I loved them.

Never read them
I heard they sort of got a bit preachy

I didn't think so
but I enjoyed all of the Wheel of Time. Each to their own.

I just thought after book 7 it creaks to a halt, and the main character of the series becomes a shit and even disappears for an entire book

From what I recall, the series was originally conceived as a 7 book series.
But it was decided it should be 12 and there's a bit of padding. But you're right. I really liked Rand until around that point.

Perrin
I liked him until Winter's Heart. He gets a bit mopey after that
