it gives the 'i' an "ee" sound,
rather than the an "eye" sound it might otherwise acquire without a double 'g'.
Also it is there to maintain regularity as the gerund of "intrigue".

g is softened by i, as a general rule.
the u makes it a hard g, just like in guile and guild and guinness and anguish.
i know, gilt doesn't fit. English doesn't have a lot of consistent sense
