I remember when he transitioned from body horror to 'mainstream' Hollywood, was it Eastern Promises or A History of Violence that was his first 'non genre' film?
Either way, he proved that he had chops beyond grossout/weird/body horror stuff.

Bit like Peter Jackson in that respect.

I never thought about it that way but you're right
I wasn't a big fan of 'A History of Violence', though, I thought he was still deciding how much blood and guts to put in and he went too far and it kind of ruined the end product (for a non-genre film)
