It's partly a case of personal freedoms balanced against finite resources and how your choices affect others

For example all the blameless people who died when they couldn't get diagnosed or treated soon enough thanks to independent thinkers who caught covid and filled up all the hospital beds, and put the doctors and nurses off sick too

In America, everything has to be weighed against the concept of personal freedoms and their possible loss. It's a perpetual theme, and it's always toxic. Guns are the perfect example.
Influence or control over the general population's ideas about what exactly constitute personal freedoms and rights has long been at the center of rightwing political thought and strategy over here. It's a versatile tool, it fits many circumstances, and it almost never fails to throw up clouds of thick angry smoke, kind of like a screen.
