Inspections are free here if done by the State DoT but they're a joke, they don't even check emissions any more
Inspection takes about 10 minutes.

I’ve always wondered if cars in the US need whatever their equivalent of an MOT is
because I’ve seen some absolute sheds driving about over there which surely aren’t roadworthy

When I had a car in New Zealand, you needed to get a Warrant of Fitness every 6 months.
