His life's work was a 3 volume anthology of Burns
Collector/archivist of Scottish poetry and folk songs. Dryden expert. Editor of shitloads of classic Oxford University Press Austen, Dickens etc. Prof of English Lit at Swansea (where he was the sworn academic enemy of Kingsley Amis according to King-o's diary), turned down an Oxford chair in favour of Nottingham as he believed he'd be fewer restricted and (as my exhausted b3ta pals x sick to death of endless repetition) was the Sex Pistols' expert witness in the 'Bollocks Trial'
