This is a normal post The producers of Star Trek: Discovery tried this.
Threw in a couple of sweary words, interspecies sex/rape scenes and upped the gore levels. It didn't work. The whole thing came off feeling awkward and forced. The charm of Star Trek is that it's relatively family friendly and has wide appeal (to geeks). The kind of folk that don't already watch Star Trek won't start just because it has violence and sweary words unless they're unbearably shallow/thick. And the addition of violence/sweary words will do absolutely nothing for the existing fans.

Now, a David Fincher Star Trek... That would be exciting.

This is a normal post I quite liked Discovery.
Well, bits of it anyway. There were some great moments, and some fucking dire ones.

And Lorca's light sensitivity seemed to come and go at random, while at the same time serving no apparent purpose in the plot.

And that guy who Spacey touched didn't get totally fucked up at the end which kinda seemed like a massive cop out.

This is a normal post It's not that I hated it, really.
It's just that it wasn't Star Trek to me. It felt far too out of character.
It's worth bearing in mind that we're only halfway through the first season, so there's still room for the story to develop, but I totally agree on the glaring plot holes regarding Lorca, Mirror Universe Stamets, etc that could have at least been developed a little further before taking a massive Winter break.
Sylvia Tilly is just massively annoying as the awkward comedy relief and is long overdue a grisly death.

I can't see it making it past Season 2, if it even gets that far.

This is a normal post You're right
It just didn't have the feel of Trek. I've started watching The Orville and that definitely seems more star trek than star trek.

This is a normal post Frankly I hope it's just a Klingon, Vulcan and Firengi sat in a room bitching for 90 minutes
Then the wrong Romulan walks in, and then it's silent tension for 15 minutes before they all shoot each other. Finally the Firengi flies off in a shuttle drunk off his fucking nut.

That honestly sounds like a mid-season episode of Babylon 5.

This is a normal post The acting in B5 wasn't all that bad.
It also had a plot that was thought out ahead of time. When I watched successive episodes of STD I got them impression they were both making it up as they went (like the whole business with Lt. Clem Fandango) and trying to one-up themselves from one episode to the next.

This is a normal post I don’t know about that
They’re running Season 1 of B5 on one of the minor Freeview channels at the moment so I’ve been refreshing my memory. The acting standards, especially of the bit-part characters, makes Neighbours look like an RSC production of Hamlet.

This is a normal post B3ta the only place where you can use " interspecies sex/rape scenes and upped the gore levels. It didn't work. The whole thing came off feeling awkward and forced" and nobody would think it strange

This is a normal post I liked Discovery, after expecting it to be a Warp 10 Clusterfuck.
Aside from the STRONG LANGUAGE AND MODERATE SEX REFERENCES...

It's quite traditional Trek. But competently done. Which is good, considering there hasn't been any good telly Trek for nearly 20 years.
