It's not even the same today as it was in 1991 when I was last blowing shit up. Things have moved on. Casualties are much less expected of a modern, fully equipped army today than they ever have been in the past.
I think that you'll find that the army accepts and understands casualties. It's the civilian administration who are upset about the public perception they create and as such their standing, politically, with the public who vote for them.
But don't be dismissive of life so casually. On both sides. If you are fighting for pay or ideals, you are fighting with the chance of death. Armchair warriors should consider that before they have too much opinion.
