i generally go over them with the eraser tool set to mildly stun, feathered edge not the nasty hard one.

I find a reasonably quick way to do this if it's a large item is to select the layer with the edges (cmd/ctrl + click on the layer icon), contract selection by a couple of pixels, invert selection, apply gaussian blur.
