# Remember as a kid when you sometimes used to get burnt cornflakes in the box ?
My dad told me they were scabs.

# When I was a kid
one of my neighbour's dads told me his mate worked in a woodyard, making the pips for Robinson's Blackberry Jam.

# Not so mad!
Are those real pips in your raspberry jam?

Jam recipes are controlled by some of the strictest food laws in the world. But why does the government bother? It's only jam!

In the past, some very dodgy things were put into jam. Instead of expensive raspberries and strawberries, some jam-makers put sugary water into the jars, and added starch to make it seem gooey. The jam-makers added colouring and flavouring, and some even put bits of wood as fake pips, to make it seem like real fruit!

# Right, but to be fair, it probably tastes like shit.

# Hmmm, you wouldn't want shit pips in your raspberry jam would you

# Not if you could get artisan-crafted, sustainably produced ones instead.

# Hehe
that page makes it seem like this is a thing of the past, whereas it's just been selectively legitimized.
A typical 'cake' in the cheap supermarket here (US) contains perhaps 30 or 40 ingredients, most of which are chemicals. If that's not adulterated food, I don't know what is.

# Aren't Twinkies made from 100% non digestible synthetic compounds?
(, Fri 27 Aug 2010, 17:21, archived)
# No sure.
I do know they're not baked, they just sort of... set.

# Really?
That's quite interesting, actually. I love "molecular cuisine"

# Yeah, me too.
I think it has some stupid excesses which can make it look ridiculous, but I also think it's a genuinely interesting approach.
Twinkies are fucking gross though.

# I only ate one twinkie in my life and I loved it
That's why it's dangerous for me to visit the states
