I think it's because seeing that other people like a thing sometimes influences other people to click like on things that they wouldn't have otherwise, so the votes are hidden on here to keep it fair. Of course, once a thing ends up on the popular page, it gets more votes because people can then see that lots of people like it, which sort of defeats the object of hiding the votes, which is...
