# I don't think anyone is denying that
even half the people behind sopa think it's fucking ridiculous.

# I agree
though I think Wikipedia and friends' "protest" is both facile and pointless, and is most likely to convince bosses around the world that productivity really does go up if people can't get onto Wikipedia. And in the meantime, the American lawmakers will carry on regardless (meaning SOPA won't go through anyway - though God knows what will happen next year.)

# I might just drop this here
not that it has a particular point to make but more because it's wiki's 24 hour protest that got in the way of me clicking a wiki link further down the board.

But yes, SOPA is gash.

edit- that probably would've gone better further down. Ahh hindsight

# Take that, James Wales!
When you go to a wiki page, it flashes the content before you get the black page. If you're *really* quick with the print screen button, you can still read it. The top bit anyway.

# I totally agree.
But only because it is extreme and the fall out will be ultimately harmful. There are already laws in place that protect against piracy, and rightly so IMHO. I have great sympathy for people whose livelihood is creative, and then get ripped off.
Often however it is 'big business' that is screwing small guys, whilst ripping off ideas that should have intellectual protection and recycling them in adverts etc for corporate gain.
Unfortunately 'America' (and I don't want to use lazy stereotyping of 'Americans') has a habit of attempting to impose its will on the rest of the world when it has no legal, moral or ethical right to do so.
Priciples of intellectual protection? good. SOPA? bad. Murdoch? self interested cunt of the highest order.

# indeed *smokes pipe* :)

# Agreed.
Especially on the part where it's just another example of big businesses screwing the small guys, mainly because they have the power and money to be this influential and are using it to be even more influential.

But they just can't be trusted to have and maintain the right morals and motives to hold such power.

# Standard Operating Proceedure.
Make an insanely ridiculous set of laws that include the thing you want that looks nasty but ultimately isn't as insane as the whole set of laws

await protest

say "lol, my bad" water down original proposal "heh, I guess you guys won huh?"

Pass seemingly watered down set of laws that include the specific stuff you want.

Either that or attach the law to legislation on lard manufacturing that MUST be passed or there will be a lard manufacturing crisis internationally or sneak it by in some similar way.

the system works
