and I'm sure you're right. But the only way we can let them know is if ballot papers had a box for 'None of the above'.
Until then we can't make a difference.

most strongly that none of them should be in power are labelled by them as too lazy or disinterested to vote.

(or just don't put a cross against anyone)
The you count as part of the turnout, demonstrating that you're not just apathetic, but haven't voted for anyone.

I had some great spoilt ballots, including one that "fuck" written in dried blood. Although the person may have just been stabbed on their way into the polling station...

I personally wouldn't waste my time with spoiling ballot papers as only the person counting and the returning officer ever sees them. It's a personal symbolic gesture at best.

vote for the one least likely to win and rebalance it slightly. or vote for the most wildly inappropriate people; if someone like the monster raving looneys are standing, vote for them. in the extraordinarily unlikely event that they got a majority in parliament they'd most likely either withdraw and spark another election, or would invite the leader of the second-largest party to form a government - and he would, in the full knowledge that he had no mandate whatsoever.

I've always wished Britain had a Reopen Nominations on the electoral forms - it would give the parties an enormous kick up the arse.
But then, I've also always wished the British public would remember that we vote by MP, not by party, and stop drivelling on about how they "didn't vote for David Cameron". No, unless you're one of the 20,000 or so people in his constituency, of course you fucking didn't. Then if more people realised that they vote by MP they might actually, you know, try talking with independent candidates who might give a toss about the constituency.
But then, I've been a big fan of outlawing the whip system - punishable with fines running into five or six figures, and ten years in jail, no parole - for a long time now.
Alas, none of the parties follow my line of thinking, which is why I've tended to be also another very disillusioned Lib Dem voter, except that I didn't vote in the last election because I didn't register myself as an overseas voter early enough.
