# I think the terrifying thing is that he clearly isn't.
No one wants to accept that he's done this out of deep-seated beliefs - instead they want to write him off as mad, but he appears to be lucid, rational, and considered.

# shooting a bunch of kids in the face strikes me as kind of mad

# believing in an omnipotent being that no one has seen or evidence of the existance of
would strike me as kind of mad.
But that's pretty much excepted by the masses and courts.

Who's to say what is right?

# hatred is a form of madness I suppose
Hitler hated jews, commies, disabled people, homosexuals, socialists, gypsies and they all felt the full face of his terror, maybe not directly by his own hands but by his words which lead to those actions. Later it was determine Hitler was a Sociopath but was he mad?

# Actually it went the other way
The original evaluation judged him to be insane. People were very unhappy with the assessment - there were a few things happening that may not have been strictly a breach of protocol but were clearly non-desirable - and so there was a second assessment recently. That assessment judged that he is not insane now, and more importantly that he was not insane at the time of the attacks.

I'm not sure which would be better, to be honest. If he were judged insane he couldn't stand trial and would instead be locked in a secure asylum for life - which would be quite a punishment for him, but would give the impression that no justice will be served. This way he can be put properly in jail (from which he will never emerge - and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn in a year or two that he "committed suicide" in jail), but it gives him a platform. And it's a platform he's *already* using, and the media across Europe are giving it to him.
