So how specific is the hunting thing?Can you get a bunch of friends together, give them air guns or pointy sticks or whatever, then when the police come round just say you're hunting rats or something? Or do you have to have a minimum portfolio size before the exemption kicks in?

History and tradition, that's what it's based on. Nothing to do with class, money, or privilege. A 'real' hunt is one that was established in the 1700s by custodians of the land, such as a lords, knights, or kings.
