Not really
They usually come back though.
My folk's cats (toms) used to have a habit of disappearing for a couple of weeks (or even 6 months) at a time.

If its not a young kitten, ie, less than 3 months old
wait. They usually turn up.
Older cats frequently bugger off for worryingly long periods of time.
If it has been missing for more than a day, ask your neighbours if they can check garages/sheds/outbuildings for said moggy.
Then its down to printing 'Lost Moggy' posters.

it's a 4 year old cat
but my mum only adopted it yesterday, and it's been a housecat all its life :/

far too far away
and this cat has never (to our knowledge, or the rspca's) been outdoors for any real length of time. all the neighbours have been told, and mum's put up signs. WAH!
