you have to avoid the obvious ones
take a street car down to California street and hop on it there, no waiting and the drivers are more relaxed. They stop half way up/down and talk to one another..
1st Driver: "hey. is this one the brake?"

Best you find a parking garage (preferrably a 24 HOUR parking garage) and go on foot.
Trolley tickets are very cheap and they last all day.
