TALK PIRATE, YE LANDLUBBERS

September 19 has been officially designated International Talk Like a Pirate Day - a worldwide tradition that began during the 1990s via the internet. So ye be gettin' ready for the big day, yarr. Where to begin?

According to the website www.thomasscott.net/yarr/ , invertin' yer sentence structure be a good idea for pirate talk. Be soundin' like a real pirate in no time, ye will. Also, ye be sure to be referrin' to friends as "shipmates", yer enemies as "scurvy landlubbers", and yer good lady as "wench".

According to a pirate-speak expert, doubling up on all your adjectives and being "bountifully bombastic" with your phrasing adds a certain air of realism. Pirates never speak of "a big ship", they call it a "great, grand ship!".

They never say "never", they say "no nay ne'er!" And one final tip, drop all your "g"s when you speak and you'll get words like rowin', sailin' and fightin' - very authentic.

# Pirates are old hat...
...cool people like vikings these days.
(, Fri 5 Sep 2003, 6:01, archived)
# Unh huh...
...I believe you. That's why we see so few pirate pics here these days...

Besides, nothing wrong with a good bit o' rape n' pillage!
(, Fri 5 Sep 2003, 6:03, archived)
# Ah...
...but you still get to rape and pillage as a viking, without being all 'populist'

# my man wears an eye patch
"not that that has any bearing on why I was drawn to this site. I am looking forward to "talk like a pirate day" and I been like practicin' an' everythin' so's I can participate, like... Uh, I thought this board was 100% supportive already. Am I WRONG?
(, Fri 5 Sep 2003, 6:09, archived)
# He he he...
...I don't completely hate pirates ;)

# I haven't followed this site for ages
I guess I figured the pirate theme was a constant... I am still learning how quickly one fad falls out of favour. There are no more pirates?
(, Fri 5 Sep 2003, 6:17, archived)
# He he he...
...I don't think there are any rules you know.

I just fancied vikings for a change is all...

# Course there are!
I like a good "yarrrrrrrrrr" from time to time.
Like yesterday, for example:

# I'm so glad
I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to open an account that would allow me to post pictures here. It shouldn't be that tough, should it? I wanted to show the picture where all the relatives in my family put patches on and tried to behave like pirates. I couldn't get past the first page. Someday, I will figure out how to post a picture on this site.

of the tofubeest?

No wonder they're not an endangered species. Poor lion wouldn't be able to puncture the buggers armoured flanks.

Now if we can just teach lions to use tab-pulls...
(, Fri 5 Sep 2003, 6:02, archived)
# my grandfather patented the pull tab, he did.
and many other things.
