When they made the dollar legal tender in 1995, and started building big fuck off resorts along the east coast, and opened much of the country up to tourism, the whole communism thing started to look more and more anachronistic and pointless. Technically it's still a Marxist Leninist country, but pragmatically it's as hungry for long green as everyone else. And Fidel is 77.

Ideological communism is all I can ascribe to, as the practical invocation of the philosophy always involves far too many people who have their own agendas for it to work. I'm still fascinated by the country though, and feel that to see the "left-overs" of the communist regieme would be a real experience. Then, at least, I could see first hand why what I would love to work as a system of governance will never come to pass here...

everything in sight, and never letting anyone know anything about those above or below them in the system, doesn't sit well with the Latin American temperament. Plus the physical infrasructure has been crumbling badly since the Soviet Union fell. And even before that, it wasn't in the best of health.
It is, however, a wonderful country, very very beautiful, inhabited by people who are kind and caring and passionate and dignified and honourable. I've been dreaming about it regularly since I got back...

on a one week holiday to the Ardenne. I took 1 pair.
We went Kayaking, i got soaked (trainers included) she had nice dry pairs back at the chalet.
Thus, we have her constant reasoning for more pairs of shoes...
