I now have a win2k pro system running in safe mode with networking, which will actually access the net.
Still doesn't work in full mode though. And the event log is showing all dorts of stuff that doesn't work.
Methinks it's a full system rebuild over the weekend...

install clean system... this 2000 install is so fucked up now that whole chunks of it just don't work. I have complaints from services I didn't even know I had...

i hear less complaints about XP than 2000 (which is most strange)
2000 seems to self-destruct

OS's occasionally just do their own thang and FUBAR*. One of me machines here worked flawlessly (with a fortnightly reboot) for a year then for no reason whatsoever went titsup.com and nothing could resurrect it. That one's now running Linux and hasn't stopped since.
*fucked up beyond all recognition unless you're an old DEC field circus engineer in which case it means failed unibus address register, fact fans

can be fixed with a bit of solderage. Refitted a new ROM socket to my prototype Memotech MTX today and the bastard STILL doesn't work. Grrr. Fortunately I know 4 ex-Memotech types so hopefully I can get the schematics.

I would reinstall if I were you.
If I may subvert your thread slightly, I was wondering if other b3tans reinstall 2k/xp regularly as a matter of course, eg every 3 or 4 months. I tend to do this as an easyish way to spring clean, but I am wondering if I am just carrying on a habit i picked up from using 9x that is no longer necessary.
