Of course he understands why he no longer runs things. The man is literally fighting for his life here. If (ha ha) found guity he'll get the noose and that is enough to make anyone play a game of "lie your ass off to try weaseling out of it".

Though I doubt there's any chance of him getting anything less than a firing squad. He set the culture and now he's going to die by it.
