Surely the majority of people on here are net geek types that have broadband, thus it doesn't really matter?

i think it's 40% or so in the UK, plus some people surf on other services like GPRS when they're away from home, plus some people have bandwidth limits
and it's totally unnecessary. it took me 2 minutes to save it, compress it, upload and post and it's 18kb rather than 200kb

Fair cop :)
I was genuinely confused as to why it matters so much. Download limits didn't occur to me.
Cheers :)

i popped up on GPRS the other week and it made me weep, brought the memory of dial-up flooding back!
i can't remember where the 40% came from, but it was only 6 months ago that broadband overtook dial-up in the UK, and a lot have limits (which i think i'd find *nearly* as distressing as dial-up :)

*punishes*
seriously though. There are still a lot of 56kers and a lot of people have bandwidth caps. Besides optimizing it takes what? 5-20 seconds dependant on the program. You can't be in that much of a rush to post something.
